Sr Software Engineer (Compute farm structure & load leveling, Perl)

Job Description and Requirements

  As part of the CIO organization with in Engineering compute services team, the candidate is primarily responsible to manage the R&D/EDA workload for the various IP development teams globally with in Synopsys and optimize the compute farm environment and help improve job runtime .

An experienced and highly self-motivated engineer is needed to work in a matrix management environment with multiple mixed Linux compute farms worldwide to monitor and optimize user throughput and farm performance.  Duties include oversee and help define load leveling configuration, compute server allocation and configuration, and disk utilization and allocation in a resource constrained environment.  As necessary, work with IT to develop new or supplement existing monitoring tools; when necessary, create monitoring tools.  Become the single point of contact between IT and farm users during your work day working closely with both groups to represent their needs and find commonalities.

Work with the user community to provide understandable feedback on job and farm status.  Provide guidance and instruction to users on how to meet user needs while optimizing farm utilization.  When necessary, work with individual users to modify their scripts to resolve farm issues.  Find creative solutions in an environment with sometimes conflicting requirements.

Requirements:

BS with 5-7 years experience or MS with 3-5 years experience required.

Strong inter-personal and communication skills, written and verbal, using multiple communication tools to local and remote users at multiple sites is required.  Must be able to multi-task, schedule, and independently prioritize multiple high priority tasks while successfully completing longer term projects.  Debugging skills must be very strong including root cause analysis and the ability to look beyond possible initial solutions to find the best and optimum solution.  Find creative solutions within broad guidelines with a good understanding of when to seek guidance and when to act independently.

Knowledge of compute farm structure and load leveling software required.  Knowledge of Oracle/Sun Grid Environment, CAE tools (Synopsys tools in particular) desirable.  Experience as a UNIX system administrator is a plus.  Fluency in Perl required; other script languages are highly desirable.  Experience with source control and product release processes a plus.
